The material.

Fur felt may mean nothing to you, or you may be thinking: of course I know it. If it’s the latter, skip this. If it’s the former, here is a quick word on what a fur felt hat is.

Fur felt simply means it is made from animal fur, usually rabbit. Hats used to be made exclusively from fur felt, but wearing a hat is no longer the norm, so people know it less well. Most hats are made from wool, for reasons of price: wool is cheaper than fur, which makes the hats easier to sell at the price.

But there is a reason hat enthusiasts prefer fur felt.

The reasons:

• Fur felt shrinks less readily than wool.
• Fur felt is finer in structure and holds its shape better.
• Wool can pill the way clothing does; fur felt does not.
• With fur felt hats you can adjust or reshape the brim more easily.
• Fur felt hats last a great deal longer than a hat made from wool.

So if you only plan to buy one hat, my choice would certainly be one in fur felt.

What I like very much about this shape of hat is that it is still finished with a silk lining and a leather sweatband. The leather has the advantage of more friction, so the hat is less likely to blow off. And the lining is a pleasure for whoever is wearing it.

The colours.

In closing:

If you want a hat that looks good, wears elegantly and lasts, I would not hesitate. The colours are handsome, particularly in person.
